I am thrilled to say that today-15 September 2016-is Impact Zone’s 2nd Founding Day!
Two years ago today I went to my neighborhood dog park at 7:30 AM or so — it might have been earlier — and met up with two friends and their dogs. I had compiled a list of names for my business. We went over the list of names. Some were good, some not so good.
We marked some that we liked. We went over them again. One criterion was that the name had to pass the, “I work at _____” test, which eliminated quite a few names as sounding, “not quite right”. We narrowed it to three names, but we all agreed on Impact Zone.
That day I registered the domain and parked the name on social media. People contacted me immediately about working together. It was exciting and thrilling. I worked on the legal side, services offered, and processes over the next 6 months. I wanted to finish my dissertation before I went live and launched.
In mid-March 2015, I went “live”. I launched my services. Since that fateful day, it has been a rollercoaster. I have learned and grown so much. I have met so many wonderful people. As the months passed, I have made some really neat new friends and colleagues who have given me so much — mostly, a much-needed dose of laughter and reality checks.
Two years later, I have walked down a road I could never have imagined. It has been a tough path. No one said this was easy, but I am still standing. Entrepreneurship ain’t for sissies. I made it to my 2nd Founding Day! Since 8 out of 10 businesses fail in the first 18 months, not every business can claim this anniversary. It is a milestone.
Some relationships have fallen by the wayside. New ones have taken their place. My life has taken a turn I could not have imagined two years ago. I expected to be surfing in Southern California, not hiking in rural Western North Carolina! I have anxiety about some aspects of my future, but I am generally content.
Join Us as We Celebrate Our 2nd Founding Day
As for the name, as time has evolved, it has proven to be perfect for this company on so many levels. It clearly represents what we do, and how we provide value to our clients’ data, businesses, and profit margins.
“Impact Zone” is also a surfing term that refers to the area where the water meets the lip of the wave. It refers to waves that are over 6 feet tall.
What does this have to do with data? Well, if you are in the correct place, you will barrel and have a great ride. If you are not, you’ll fall and end up in the whitewater—i.e., get pounded by the wave and possibly held down. It seemed an apt metaphor for the proper use of data in business.
Has Impact Zone been worth the rollercoaster of the past two years? It sure has! I don’t regret a single moment.
I am so thrilled to make it to this second founding day. From deep in my heart, I hope you, too, can weather life’s challenges and make your dreams come true.
